What You Need to Know as a Vendor – Accessibility for Digital Products

Key Principles of Digital Accessibility and Legal Requirements

Updated this week

The Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) requires companies to make their digital products and services accessible as of June 28, 2025.
The goal is to ensure equal access to digital offerings for people with disabilities.

As a vendor, you are directly affected – especially if you offer digital products such as e-books, software, or webinar services via CopeCart.

Our goal: Together with you, we aim to make digital products accessible to everyone – while ensuring compliance with legal requirements.

Summary of Key Points

  • Existing products: Products released before the deadline do not need to be adapted.

  • Existing services: May continue until June 30, 2030 – as long as they remain unchanged.

  • CopeCart's responsibility: As a (re)seller, CopeCart ensures that only legally compliant products are sold through the platform.

  • Vendor responsibility: Vendors must contractually confirm that their products comply with the BFSG.

What does accessibility mean?

According to the BFSG, accessible digital products must be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust – in line with the standards of EN 301 549 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1).

Examples of requirements:

  • Websites and platforms must be operable via keyboard.

  • Content must be readable with screen readers.

  • Videos must have subtitles or transcripts.

  • User guidance must be clear and understandable.

  • Text and interactive elements must have sufficient color contrast.

What You Should Do as a Vendor

Check your products for accessibility
Use standards like EN 301 549 or have your products evaluated by a specialized provider.

Provide a conformity declaration
This demonstrates that your product meets the required standards (similar to the CE marking).

Document your actions
For example, provide testing reports, technical documentation, or internal checklists.

If you find that your product is no longer compliant, please inform us immediately.

Tools for Accessibility Testing
Here are some helpful tools for testing the accessibility of digital products:

  • WAVE Accessibility Tool – Website testing

  • PDF Accessibility Checker (PAC 3) – PDF file testing

  • axe DevTools or Lighthouse – Technical analysis directly in the browser
